Counseling & Grief Support

At Hospice of Broward County, we are there for anyone in the community who has experienced a loss – families, adults, teens and children. From support groups to workshops, we offer families the opportunity to continue their care as members of our Hospice family.

These services are offered at no charge to the families and friends of hospice patients:

Grief Support Groups: Our support groups provide opportunities for individuals to share their grief safely and to interact with others who have had similar losses. Prior to participation, you’ll meet individually with a bereavement counselor who will seek to understand your situation and offer support. We offer specialized groups for adults, children, and teens, so that you can interact more comfortably. Please call us at (561) 227-5175 for a schedule of classes, or register online here

“The Nature of Grief” Workshop Series: Our three-part informational workshop provides an overview of the grief process, including the impact of grief on relationships, your worldview, jobs, and your identity. In the workshop, you’ll meet other individuals who are going through the grief process and be given proven suggestions on ways to cope.

Individual and Family Grief Support: We recognize the individuality of grief expression. Our bereavement counselors are professionals experienced in helping and support adults, children, and teens in their grief journey. They offer you individualized options in coping with your grief; you can work with a counselor to identify which approach works the best for you.

Anticipatory Grief Support for Children and Teens: Our skilled children's counselors provide support to children and teens who face the impending loss of a loved one to terminal illness. Services are tailored to meet each child's needs through individual, family and group counseling.

School-Based Group Counseling: We offer school-based support groups to provide bereavement support to children who have lost a family member, whether or not they were under our care. These groups are offered in public and private community schools throughout the county.

SHARE: Share is a national support program that assists families coping with the devastation of pregnancy or infant loss, or the death of a child under the age of five. To honor your child’s memory, commemorative bricks may be purchased.   Cick here to purchase a brick online.  For our professional healthcare partners, we also offer education on prenatal and infant loss through the SHARE program.

Messages of Caring: Several times throughout the year, we’ll send out supportive mailings that give information about the grief process and provide suggestions for coping. These letters also serve as a reminder of our ongoing availability to families and friends in our community.

Telephone Grief Support: Bereavement Center staff and volunteers are there for you, providing telephone calls of support after the death of a loved one.

Memorial Service: Throughout the year, we sponsor events to honor and celebrate the memories of loved ones. Our Celebration of Life Event, held each Spring in Palm Beach County, is a day to remember those we love.

“Coping with the Holidays” Program: This program helps you cope with the overwhelming feelings that holidays and special occasions often create.

"Coping with the Jewish Holidays" Program:  Navigating times of the year with special meaning can be stressful, particularly following the loss of a loved one. This program, provided annually in advance of Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah, provides useful tips on coping with this special time in accordance with faith and tradition.

Camp SeaStar Retreat: Camp SeaStar is a annual event for children who have experienced a loss and have been through our grief support services. This wonderful event allows children camping fun and sharing time with other children over an event-filled weekend. The Camp is funded through the generous donations of our Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation supporters.

Community Outreach: Our staff provides educational presentations, interventions and training sessions to businesses, schools, agencies and places of worship throughout the community.

Children's Grief Support: The death of a loved one is particularly hard for a child, who may not have yet developed skills to cope with the loss. To meet this need in the community, we offer specialized bereavement support for children. Depending on the needs of the child and family, this support may include individual, family or group support services, as well as music and/or art therapy.

If you would like to attend any of our free classes, please fill out this registration form.

Resources and Referrals:  Reading and learning about the grief process can be helpful.  We provide materials about grief and mourning to our hospice and community families upon request or as part of our counseling support.  Referrals to other agencies or services will be made as necessary.
